Consumer prices in Vietnam rose 4.09 percent year-on-year in October of 2016, following a 3.34 percent increase in September. It was the highest inflation rate since August 2014, as prices went up for: food (+2.90 percent); beverages, tobacco (+2.03 percent); garments (+1.61 percent); housing & construction (+3.41 percent), household appliances (+0.93 percent), medicine (+46.84 percent), education (+10.92 percent), culture & entertainment (+1.36 percent) and other goods and services (+2.29 percent). In contrast, cost declined for: transport (-3.74 percent) and posts and telecoms (-0.79 percent). Core inflation rose 1.86 percent, compared to a 1.85 percent in the preceding month. On a month-on-month basis, consumer prices edged up 0.07 percent, the same pace as in September.
