The Buz ON Lithium Today
BUZ INVESTORS Lithium At the Detroit Auto Show in January, General Motors’ (GM) Chevrolet unveiled the 2017 Chevrolet Bolt, a new electric vehicle that can reportedly travel more than 200 miles on a single charge of its lithiumbatteries. The car will cost $30,000. batteries already power everyday electronics like smartphones and tablets, but many companies see the carbon-neutral power source playing a much bigger role in the energy sector in the near future. Investors should take note: lithium is one of the most promising commodity bets for 2016 and beyond.
Rechargeable batteries have become the most popular power source for smartphones, laptops and tablets. But processing is expensive, accounting largely for the price tag on these electronics. Lithiu power has generally been too expensive for battery-powered cars and houses to take off. Witness the price tag on Tesla Motors’ (TSLA) battery-powered Model S Sedan ($69,000).
But as the low price tag on the Chevy Bolt shows, lithium power is becoming affordable as firms compete to develop cost-effective ways to invest in renewable energy. If all goes to plan for Tesla, affordable lithium-powered homes will soon be in the offing. The company’s new Gigafactory in Nevada is designed to mass-produce cheaper car batteries, but it will also produce the “PowerWall,” a 100 kg battery for powering homes and businesses that is projected to cost just $350/kwH (kilowatt hours).
