I had outlined in my previous article about this company, “Activision Blizzard, Inc.: If ATVI Stock Does THIS, the Sky’s the Limit,” that Activision stock was lagging the general market indices.

I also explained in my previous publication about this stock that, even though relative weakness is a bearish indication, Activision shares were testing an important level of support and that if a certain criterion was met, this could spell the beginning of an impressive run to the upside.

I was not disappointed with the outcome that followed, as ATVI shares surged to create a new high after the company reported impressive earnings results.

The price action that followed the test of support was orderly and constructive, which served to suggest that higher prices were set to follow. Orderly and constructive price action consists of impulse waves that advance a price, and consolidation waves that serve to alleviate overbought conditions and set up the next advancing impulse wave.

This wave structure began in early December 2016, and it implied that the price was going to overtake the 200-day SMA.

potential target for ATVI stock, I would have to point back to the ascending channel and suggest that the upward-sloping level of resistance is a logical price objective. It is difficult to pinpoint an exact level because, as time progresses, this level continues to move higher due to its upward slope, but I can safely say that resistance is currently much higher than current prices.

ATVI stock surged 17% midday on Friday, to a new record high, after delivering an impressive fourth quarter. In the process, the Activision Blizzard stock price broke above key chart resistance at $41.00—$45.00 on a bullish opening gap.

The stock has been on a nice uptrend, with multiple breakouts in 2013, 2015, and on Friday. The uptrend has been accompanied by a rising moving average convergence/divergence (MACD) and relative strength.

While the Call of Duty franchise is the company’s cornerstone game, Activision Blizzard also markets popular games such as World of Warcraft and Destiny.

But what is also exciting was the company’s strategic decision to acquire mobile games maker King Digital Entertainment PLC (NYSE:KING) for $5.9 billion in February 2016. The company is best known for its Candy Crush mobile game that took the mobile gaming world by storm. The company pipeline comprises of more than 200 games.

The move to add King Digital was imperative, as the gaming world is moving rapidly toward mobile platforms, so it made a whole lot of sense for Activision Blizzard, which did not have a major mobile presence.

Activision Blizzard, Inc.: Ominous Implications for ATVI Stock?

  • BUz Investors Ominous Implications for ATVI I am concerned about Activision Blizzard, Inc.(NASDAQ:ATVI) stock because I have reason to believe the trend that has been so good to investors is now beginning to slow.
  • This developer and publisher of video games has rewarded investors a great deal since 2013 by producing 310% in potential profits
  • My concerns stem from the price chart of Activision stock. The overall trend remains intact, but there are ominous signs that the trend towards higher prices has begun to slow. The trend line that has supported ATVI stock during this bullish run could be put to the test.

Ominous Implications for ATVI Warning Signs

Ominous Implications for ATVI

Ominous Implications for ATVI I have been using price charts to generate investment strategies for over a decade, and I have learned over that time that one indicator alone never serves to produce an effective strategy because there is no one indicator that works 100% of the time. I have found that using multiple indicators in order to generate one trading bias has produced positive trading results.

The trend line has been tested numerous times and every time the bulls have come in to support the price of Activision stock. At the moment, I am concerned that once again this trend line will be tested, and the following indicators are alluding to such a possibility.

The moving average convergence/divergence (MACD) indicator in the lower panel is a simple and effective trend-following momentum indicator. Signal line crossings are used to distinguish between bullish and bearish signals. The signal is now bearish and it indicates that selling pressure outpaces buying pressure. Essentially, the bears are now in control of ATVI stock.

These divergences have specifically raised my concerns that ATVI stock may soon test the uptrend line. Divergences suggest weakness, so not only does this suggest a test of the trend line, but the uptrend line might be in jeopardy of breaking as an unconfirmed high may suggest that the buyers might not be there to support the share price as support is tested.

In theory, when a stock pulls back from a primary trend, shares will retrace approximately 50%-62% of the primary move.

A pullback (or draw-down) of this size and magnitude are normal within the context of a bull market. Many stocks that are sitting at all-time highs today have experienced such pullbacks. The emotions that follow such a draw-down are the catalyst that will eventually help fuel the eventual resurgence of the price.

In April 2016, ATVI stock generated a death cross, but that signal was quickly averted. Averted signals are powerful indicators, and many great runs have occurred on such an indicator. Failed indicators are actually more powerful than regular trading signals, and the reason is that any traders who used the initial signal to enter a speculative position need to quickly unwind and reverse their positions. This action serves to accelerate the prevailing trend.

The 50-day moving average is the line highlighted in blue in the chart above. This moving average has served as support during a majority of this bull run. The strength of the trend comes into question when ATVI stock is trading below the moving average. In October, Activision Blizzard stock successfully bounced off of this moving average, and the trend higher has continued.

ATVI Stock to Continue Flying

ATVI Stock to Continue Flying In March 2015, ATVI stock generated a golden cross. A golden cross is a bullish signal that is produced when a 50-day moving average, highlighted in blue, crosses above a 200-day moving average, highlighted in red. I use this signal to confirm that a bull market is on the horizon. I found it wise to always trade in the direction of this signal, thus a long or neutral position is warranted. Ignoring this signal and trading against it has proved to be very foolish and costly.

In April 2016, ATVI stock generated a death cross, but that signal was quickly averted. Averted signals are not to be ignored, as they have indeed become a favorite of mine. Averted signals are extremely powerful, and this is due to traders and speculators front-running a signal only to see it fail.

These individuals must then quickly reverse the trade, and this process adds further fuel to the trend and has a tendency to accelerate the prevailing trend.

Activision Blizzard stock hit the bottom of this channel in February 2016, and I can only assume based on the previous trend that this position will continue to trend higher until the upper bound of the channel is hit. The cup-and-handle pattern serves to reinforce this premise. The slope of this channel is positive, and the longer it takes to hit the upper parallel line, the higher the target price is.

The ascending channel also serves to define risk. If Activision Blizzard stock trades below the bottom of this channel, I will have reason to believe that the overall bullish trend in ATVI stock has been terminated.

ATVI Stock Is Heading Higher The Deliverables

Activision Blizzard, Inc.: Why ATVI Stock Is Heading Higher
Activision Blizzard makes money in a number of different ways through three operating segments: “Activision,” “Blizzard,” and “King.” The company produces games across a number of genres.

ATVI Stock Is Heading Higher In the last 12 quarters, Activision stock’s gross revenues have grown at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of better than seven percent. In that same time, Activision stock earnings per shares (EPS) have risen at a CAGR of nearly 10.75%. Free cash flow has averaged $315.0 million annually. So clearly Activision Blizzard is doing something right, and Activision stock reflects that. The question is how do they do it?

distributors. Activision delivers video games that can be played across a number of different platforms (personal computers (PCs), game consoles, and mobile devices), and then it charges people to play. The company sells existing customers other downloadable content and services, such as the option to remove ads from a “free” game.

In my opinion, Activision Blizzard stands to be the primary beneficiary of the expansion of the still-nascent eSports industry. In January, Activision stock closed its acquisition of Major League Gaming, Inc. (MLG), which creates live gaming events and professional gaming competitions and then streams them live to audiences around the world. MLG also runs competitive gaming leagues.

Led by a former ESPN executive, MLG could become the National Football League (NFL) of our future fully-immersed digital lives. And Activision plans to use MLG as the basis for expanding its own “eSports Broadcast Network.” (Source: “Activision Blizzard Acquires the Business of Major League Gaming,” Major League Gaming, , January 4, 2016.)

Following adjustments, Activision Blizzard stock reported a profit of $0.45 a share. In comparison, analysts on average were predicting an adjusted profit of $0.42 on sales of $1.45 billion. While the company continues to hold onto a strong gaming audience with its Call of Dutyfranchise and the Overwatch title that was successfully launched in May, the real sugar rush in ATVI stock earnings could be traced to acquiring King Digital’s wildly popular Candy Crush series of video games. For Activision Blizzard, Inc., the London-based King Digital was more than ripe for the taking; the $5.9-billion purchase price was $18 a share, which is a good distance below King Digital’s $22.50 a share from its 2014 initial public offering (IPO).

ATVI Stock: What’s the Hold-up?

Activision Blizzard, Inc.: This Could Send ATVI Stock Surging

I have been watching Activision Blizzard, Inc. (NASDAQ:ATVI) stock for some time, and for good reason; I like the chart.

I use charts as the basis to set investment strategies. This process allows me to stay systematic and objective. In my many years in the investment game, I have realized that I was indeed my own enemy. If I let my emotions get the better of me, I usually ended up regretting the series of event that followed.

The Fibonacci retracement numbers are a technical tool used by traders to identify where price support and resistance can be found. The most popular numbers eyed by traders is the 50% and 62% retracement levels. Depending on the trading strategy, traders will use these levels to enter or exit their respective trade. The theory surrounding these numbers is that after a stock completes its primary move, it will retrace it by approximately 50% to 62% before resuming the primary trend.

ATVI stock conformed to this tool perfectly. The blue box is what traders refer to as trading into the box. When shares fall into the box, it signals to traders that they should cover on their short positions and to start building a long position. Using this technique to acquire shares has proved to be a winning strategy, and has proved to me that this investment does indeed adhere to technical trading strategies.

month-and-a-half has past since the pattern executed, and shares have failed to follow through. In order to manage my trade, I would have set a “stop-loss”. The stop-loss is based on the uptrend line, formed using the lows in February, and the horizontal support from the cup and handle. I would set that stop-loss at $38.46, slightly below the trend lines, and avoiding whole numbers. This would allow some buffer in the hopes of not getting stopped out by the random noise that is present in intraday trading. It also limits my downside to less that 10%, while my upside is approximately 30%. This represents a favorable risk vs. return objective.
